Lieutenant General Harminderjit Singh Sachdev, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, assumed the appointment of Director General of Assam Rifles on 21 September 2015.
The General Officer is an alumnus of Rashtriya Military School, Ajmer, the National Defence Academy Khadakvasla and the Indian Military Academy Dehradun from where he was commissioned in December 1976 in the First Gorkha Rifles. In an illustrious career spanning 39 years , he has had an exemplary profile. His early service saw him participating in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and Operation Rakshak in Punjab where he was also injured. He has commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Sector in Counter Insurgency environment in Jammu & Kashmir and a RAPID Division in the desert sector. His staff experience includes the important assignments of Brigade Major of an Independent Infantry Brigade, General Staff Officer (Operational Research and System Analysis) in Perspective Planning Directorate of the Army, Brigadier General Staff (All Arms Training) in Army Training Command and as Additional Director General of Military Operation (Information Warfare) in Directorate General of Military Operations, Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army).

The General has attended the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the College of Defence Management, and the National Defence College. He has served as a instructor in the College of Defence Management, and was Head of Department of Operations Research. He has been the Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Command and South Western Command before taking over the present assignment. He has been conferred with the awards of Sena Medal (Distinguished) in Jan 2007 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in Jan 2015.
