Som Nath Kaul: Birth Centenary of S. N. Kaul

16th June, 2022 was the Birth Centenary Day of Late Shri Som Nath Kaul who was born on 16th June 1922 at Srinagar, Kashmir.

After completion of his schooling from Burn Hall School, Srinagar (Gupkar Road, Sonwar, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir 190001) – he did his graduation from Sri Pratap College, commonly known as SP College and thereafter higher education at Lahore from the Punjab University which was in Lahore then.

He taught and was on the staff at The Lawrence School, Sanawar (Sanawar, Kasauli, Solan, Himachal Pradesh 173202) which was then one of the most reputed residential public school of our country under Government of India and run by the Ministry of Defence .

While at The Lawrence School, Sanawar he was one of the members in the H. N. KUNZRU parliamentary committee of 1951 on reorganisation of the FOUR KGRIMC (King George Royal Indian Military College) then situated at Jullunder, Ajmer, Belgaum and Bangalore.

After shifting of KGRIMC Jullundur institution to Nowgong near Jhansi in Madhya Pradesh and reorganisation of these four KGRIMC institutions their names were changed to “King George School” in 1952 he joined at Nowgong as the FIRST Master Gazetted Academics / Education through the UPSC selection with the main task of converting / gradual switch over of these four KGS institutions at Nowgong, Ajmer, Belgaum, Bangalore under the Ministry of Defence from the Army Special examination system to the Senior Cambridge examination system on the lines of other residential public schools like The Doon School Dehradun, The Daly College Indore, Mayo College Ajmer, The Lawrence School Sanawar and at Lovedale etc., etc,.

In 1956 he was the first to see and finalise the premises at Chail where KGS Nowgong institution later shifted in 1960.

In 1957 he was transferred to KGS Belgaum in Karnataka.

He was also totally involved in the Academic setting up of the new institution “King George School” at Dholpur in Rajasthan .

He was also involved in 1959 / 1960 in the Academic set up and formation of the newly Sainik Schools which were started in 1961 the first one being at Satara in Maharashtra and also in setting up of Sainik School Chittorgarh, Rajasthan in 1961, Sainik School Kapurthala, Punjab in 1961 and Sainik School Bijapur, Karnataka in 1963.

He was the only staff member of KGS who had visited KGRIMC Jhelum (now known as Military College Jhelum – MCJ) in Pakistan prior to partition of the country in 1947.

For information of ALL GEORGIANS – the foundation stone of the first two institutions namely KGRIMS Jullundur and Jhelum (now in the Alamgir District of Pakistan) was laid in 1922 and started functioning from September 1925.

He also had a two year tenure at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune from 1968 to 1970.

In 1972 he took premature retirement from the KGS / MS institutions which were under the Ministry of Defence and joined the educational trust of the Maharaja of Baroda, HH Fatehsinghrao Prataprao Gaekwad II and was with them till 1987.

In October 1997 he expired at Baroda.
