RMS Chail to open ‘Brave Hearts’ memorial
As part of its centenary celebrations, Rashtriya Military School (RMS), Chail, unveiled the “Bravehearts Memorial” to honour its distinguished alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. The ceremony, held with solemn pride, was graced by the family members of the fallen soldiers, with Maj Gen JS Mangat, VSM, GOC PH&HP(I) Sub-Area Commander & Chairman of Local Body Administration as the chief guest.
The families of the bravehearts, including Sub Maj Ravi Pratap Singh, father of Captain Anshuman Singh, Veena Gupta, mother of Lt Cdr Shwet Gupta, and Brigadier BS Kanwar, uncle of Colonel Kanwar Jaideep Singh, attended the ceremony. The unveiling of their busts served as a moving tribute to their valour, ensuring their legacy remains forever etched in the school’s history.
Addressing the gathering, Maj Gen JS Mangat, VSM, commended the courage of these soldiers and urged the cadets to emulate their bravery, discipline and patriotism. Senior military officials, cadets, and distinguished guests were present, marking a new chapter in the school’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
Each name on the memorial tells a tale of unparalleled bravery:
- Captain GS Salaria, Param Vir Chakra (Posthumous) – The first NDA and RMS Chail alumnus to receive the Param Vir Chakra, Capt Salaria led an attack on 90 heavily armed rebels in Congo (1961) as part of a UN mission, fighting till his last breath.
- 2nd Lieutenant Surinderpal Singh Sekhon, Vir Chakra (Posthumous) – Displayed exceptional courage during the 1965 war, saving wounded soldiers under heavy artillery fire before being martyred.
- Colonel Kanwar Jaideep Singh, Shaurya Chakra (Bar) (Posthumous) – Led a patrol in Rajouri (2002), eliminating two terrorists before succumbing to injuries, ensuring his troops’ safety.
- Lieutenant Commander Shwet Gupta, Nao Sena Medal (Posthumous) – Bravely entered a gas-filled compartment aboard INS Jalashwa (2008) to save three sailors but later succumbed to toxic fumes.
- Captain Anshuman Singh, Kirti Chakra (Posthumous) – During Operation MEGHDOOT (2023), he rescued multiple soldiers from a fire before making the ultimate sacrifice while retrieving medical supplies.
A legacy of valour
- RMS-Chail reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing future military leaders. The Bravehearts Memorial stands as a powerful symbol of selfless service and heroism, inspiring generations of cadets.
- The special event featured an assembly with prayers, a group song and biographies of the five honoured soldiers, followed by memento presentations to their families and the chief guest by Principal Vimal Kumar Gangwal.
